How to Install Bicycle Handlebar Stem

  1. Remove old stem – Loosen handlebar clamp bolts and steerer wedge bolt. Slide off old stem.
  2. Prepare new stem – If using a threaded fork, insert the wedge into the steerer tube. For threadless, ensure proper fit.
  3. Set height – Slide stem onto fork to desired height.
  4. Tighten wedge – For threaded forks, tighten the top bolt to expand wedge against steerer. For threadless, tighten stem clamp bolts.
  5. Install handlebars – Place handlebars in clamp. Align to preferred angle. Tighten faceplate bolts evenly.
  6. Final check – Verify all bolts are tight. Test stem and bars for any movement before riding.
